Koh Samui, Thailand

Much quieter than its Thai island cousin Phuket, Koh Samui boasts stunning white sandy beaches with calm, shallow water, making it another of our picks for best family destinations in Asia.

A good selection of excellent restaurants, fun family attractions and a large choice of family friendly resorts all make Koh Samui ideal for family beach holidays in Asia.

Bali, Indonesia

Bali is one of the most popular places to visit in Asia for families. Renowned for its rich culture, fabulous dining scene and stunning scenery and miles of beaches, its no wonder people flock to Bali year on year for their Southeast Asia family holidays.

Bali for kids

The beauty of Bali is you can visit several times and stay in a different location and experience a completely different kind of holiday. A family holiday in amongst the rice paddies of Ubud is a very different one to a beach holiday in Seminyak.

Click here to read more about the different areas of Bali.

Wherever you stay, a family highlight of Bali is definitely Waterbom water park. Families can also enjoy cycling tours, white water rafting, snorkeling and watching some of the fascinating cultural performances.

Lombok, Indonesia

Known as the ‘new Bali’, next-door Lombok is a quieter option for a beach holiday in Indonesia. With its longs stretches of beach lined by coconut palms, if you’re looking for a relaxing Asia beach holiday, you’ve got it here.

Lombok beach

Beyond the beaches there is plenty of exploring to do in Lombok. Visit Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s largest volcano, go swimming at Sendanggile Waterfall or take a horse and cart tour around some local villages, including Masbagik Village, which is famous for its traditional earthenware.

It’s also fun to spend a day at Sengiggi Beach scouring the handicraft stalls and art market and hanging out in the beachside restaurants. Or head over to the Gili Islands for the day for some snorkelling or diving with the resident turtles.

Family hotels in Lombok

Although not as crowded as Bali, there is still a large selection of resorts in Lombok for families to choose from. From the very luxurious to basic beachfront accommodation, you can take your pick in Lombok. Two of our favourite family resorts in Lombok are highlighted below.

The Oberoi Lombok

This secluded and relaxing family resort in Lombok has a selection of luxury, thatched pavilions and villas set within 24 acres of beautifully presented tropical gardens.

The highlight for families is the gorgeous infinity pool, surrounded by palm trees and cascading down to a ruggedly beautiful beach. The resort is just a short 10-minute boat ride to the Gili Islands for fabulous snorkeling and diving opportunities.

Gili Islands, Indonesia

Just off the coast of Lombok the Gili Islands offer more laid-back fun-in-the-sun relaxation. Diving and snorkeling are the most popular activity here, with the resident turtle population being a real draw to many.

Beyond the reefs you can hire bikes to explore the islands or hop aboard a horse and cart for a tour around. You can also take a glass bottom boat trip, hire a stand up paddle board or kayak, go island hopping around the other Gili Islands, or take the boat over to Lombok to explore for the day.

Gili islands with kids

There are three islands to choose from here – Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. All offer white sandy beaches, turquoise water, laid-back beach bars and a selection of dive shops and resorts.

Our pick of the best Gili Island for families would be Gili Air, as Gili T tends to attract the rowdy backpackers, and Gili Meno is known as the ‘honeymoon island’. For us Gili Air strikes a good balance of amenities such as bars and restaurants, with relative tranquility.

Where to stay in Gili Islands with Kids

Accommodation in the Gili Islands tends to be fairly laidback and basic rather than glitzy and luxurious. It’s all about the beach vibe and natural surroundings in Gili.

Manta Dive Resort, Gili Air

This 3-star resort in Gili Air has a selection of rooms and bungalows, including family rooms and connecting rooms. Rooms are also large enough to add a cot or additional mattress if required.

Riau Islands, Indonesia

These Indonesian islands close to Singapore are a popular holiday destination for families. Handily located just an hours ferry ride from Singapore, you have several islands to choose from here.

The largest island is Bintan, with neighbouring Batam Island coming in a close second. Both offer a choice of family resorts and activities. The main focus here is on the beach, watersports and golf, as there are several golf courses to choose from here.

Family resort Bintan

Beyond the main two islands, there are several private island resorts to choose from, which require an additional boat ride from Bintan.

These include the gorgeous Nikoi Island, Telunas Private Island Resort and Pulau Joyo. You can read more about all of these in our private island round up here.

Where to stay in the Riau Islands

Bintan Island has a number of luxury family friendly resorts to choose from, with Batam Island adding a few more family resorts into the mix.

Angsana Bintan

Located on a 1.5km pristine private beach, the Angsana Bintan is a great choice for a beach getaway from Singapore. The spacious family suites have two bedrooms plus living area, with private jetpools.

Montigo Resorts Nongsa, Batam

Batam was long seen as Bintan’s poorer cousin when it came to beach destinations near Singapore. But all that changed when Montigo Resorts opened up.

With its stunning 1-5 bedroom villas all offering minimalist luxury and sea views, this is a great place to chill out with family and friends. There’s a kids club, virtual reality room and plenty of watersports and other fun activities on offer. There’s also a good choice of restaurants and a wonderful spa.

Bohol, The Philippines

Bohol in the Philippines is a great destination for family holidays in Asia. Offering the best of both worlds, here you have gorgeous white sandy beaches and crystal clear water for snorkeling, but also fun countryside activities to enjoy.

Bohol island hopping with kids

Most beachfront resorts are located on Panglao Island, just a 10-minute drive from the airport. Here you can arrange island hopping tours, dolphin watching, and snorkeling or diving trips to the nearby reefs and marine parks.

In the countryside, there are the chocolate hills to explore, riverboat cruises, firefly kayaking, stand up paddle boarding trips and the Chocolate Hills Adventure Park with its treetop rope courses and adrenaline-inducing bicycle zip line. Don’t miss visiting the cute little tarsier population!

Best Family Resorts in Bohol

There is a good selection of family hotels in Bohol, particularly on Panglao Island close to the beach. This is the ideal location for island hopping trips, but also the interior is easily reachable within an hour for countryside tours.

Amorita Resort

This stunning boutique hotel is set on the cliffs overlooking Alona Beach on Panglao Island. Its 96 suites and villas are set amongst beautifully landscaped tropical gardens.

El Nido, The Philippines

With its crystal clear water and some of the best beaches in Southeast Asia, it’s all about watersports and island hopping tours in El Nido. The beautiful scenery and water clarity here will blow you away.

El Nido family holiday

Island hopping tours take you kayaking in hidden lagoons, snorkeling on pristine reefs, exploring caves and frolicking on deserted beaches. There’s really not much more to El Nido than this, but if you are looking for an awesome beach and watersports destination in beautiful surroundings, El Nido is hard to beat.

Where to stay in El Nido

In El Nido, the most expensive and luxurious resorts are located on private islands off the mainland of Palawan. El Nido Resorts owns three of these resorts – Pangalusian, Miniloc and Lagen Island. For more affordable options, look at resorts close to El Nido town on the mainland.

Lagen Island

Our pick of the El Nido Resorts hotels for families is Lagen Island, a gorgeous beachfront eco-sanctuary resort tucked under staggering limestone cliffs. Choose from rooms in the Forest wing, or opt for the gorgeous water villas on stilts or beachfront villas with panoramic views out to sea.

Although the focus is on watersports and exploring the beautiful surrounding area, within the resort there is a beautiful swimming pool and small kids playroom. Dinner is eaten under the stars when possible. This is hands-down one of my favourite resorts I have ever stayed in!

Click here to check prices and availability for Lagen Island.

El Nido Mahogany Resort & Spa

For a more affordable option, the Mahogany Resort is located on Corong Corong beach on the mainland of Palawan and close to El Nido town. The hotel is beachfront, with a swimming pool.

The Maldives

Once the domain of honeymooners, the Maldives has definitely embraced the family travel market over the past few years.

Renowned for its gorgeous white sandy secluded islands, crystal clear water and incredible diving and snorkeling opportunities, the Maldives is the dream bucket list destination for many.

Maldives family resort

So many Maldives resorts now are targeting families, with kids clubs and activities, babysitting and kids menus all on offer. Families can take part in watersports, dolphin watching tours, snorkeling and more.

When choosing a resort in the Maldives for family vacations, bear in mind that some resorts need to be reached via seaplane, which can really push up the cost of your vacation.

Seaplane tickets can sometimes be as much as you international flight. Seaplane transfers also only take place during daylight hours.

The Best Family Resorts in the Maldives

There are almost too many amazing family hotels in the Maldives to choose from, with all the major hotel brands represented here, as well as smaller boutique offerings.

We have personally stayed at four different Maldives family resorts and loved them all. Below we highlight two of our favourites for families.

Soneva Fushi

Soneva Fushi is a really special resort, and differs from other Maldives resorts in that it focuses on eco-friendly design and practice over glitz and glamour. The luxury here comes in the form of unique experiences and unbelievable personal service.

Read our full Soneva Fushi review here.

The other thing that sets Soneva Fushi apart from other family friendly resorts in the Maldives is the size of its villas – here you can stay in anything from 1-bedroom all the way up to 9-bedroom villas, all with private facilities.

The other reason this resort made our top pick is its kids club. Arguably one of the best kids clubs in the world, my kids continually talk about this one. With its own pool with a slide, Lego room, music room, kitchen for cooking classes, it really is incredible.

Click here to check prices and availability for Soneva Fushi.

Niyama Private Islands

Niyama Resort is another unique resort for families in the Maldives as it was really built with families in mind. A selection of 1-3 bedroom villas are available, with specific family villas on offer. There’s a whole host of watersports and other activities on offer for active families.

Niyama Maldives has an amazing kids club with playground, trampoline, splash play area and gourmet kitchen and a comprehensive activity schedule that includes dolphin tours, stand up paddle boarding and snorkeling.

Hoi An & Danang, Vietnam

Hoi An and Danang in Vietnam continue to grow in popularity as an Asian holiday destination, and little wonder. This gorgeous coastal area has so much to offer for families.

Hoi An family destination Asia

Beautiful beaches, amazing cuisine, stunning countryside and a rich and vibrant culture all combine to attract tourists from all over the world to this Asian beachside destination.

Hoi An is one of Asia’s most beautiful towns and is home to a fantastic selection of restaurants and boutique shopping.

Strolling the streets here and browsing the shops is a popular pastime in itself. Then there are plenty of countryside cultural tours and activities to take part in – and of course then there is the beach.

Best family resorts in Hoi An & Danang

Again, you are really spoilt for choice when it comes to hotels in Hoi An and Danang. Most families choose the stretch of An Bang Beach, which connects the two towns. This is where you will find many of the best resorts, which benefit from the gorgeous beach, but still within easy reach of Hoi An town.

Click here to read our full selection of family friendly hotels in Hoi An & Danang.

Four Seasons Nam Hai

If money is no object, the Nam Hai is one of my favourite resorts in Asia. There are several villas that suit families, including specific family villas with annexes and day beds, as well as larger pool villas.

Children are only allowed in two of the three swimming pools, but it is a gorgeous pool with water fountains. The hotel is located right on one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in the area. There is a kids club, plus both adults and kids bikes are provided for getting around the resort.

Click here to check prices and availability for the Four Seasons Nam Hai.

Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa Danang

This Danang hotel offers a good choice of family accommodation in Danang, including 1-3 bedroom apartments and 3-bedroom beach villas. All of these offer plenty of space and kitchen, dining and living areas.

There are two swimming pools, including one with a waterslide and ‘beach’ area for sandcastle building, plus a good choice of restaurants. The kids club will keep kids entertained with a good activity program, outdoor playground and even rock climbing on offer.

Click here to check prices and availability for the Hyatt Regency Danang.

Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

Kota Kinabalu in Borneo is another popular Asia holiday destination for families, who are all drawn here by its white sandy beaches and tropical weather.

Of course the other big draw to Borneo is its fabulous wildlife and beyond the confines of your tropical resort here, there is plenty to do in Kota Kinabalu with kids.

Kota Kinabalu as a family holiday destination in Asia

From island hopping around the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, visiting the Mari Mari Cultural Village, river cruising in search of proboscis monkeys and braving the canopy walkways of Kinabalu Park, there is plenty to keep active families happy here.

If you want to travel further afield, a popular trip is to head down to Sandakan to visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the Kinabatangan River.

Where to stay in Kota Kinabalu with Kids

There is a good selection of family resorts in Kota Kinabalu to choose from, with most offering beachfront accommodation. Our pick of accommodation in Kota Kinabalu for family vacations has to go to the two Shangri-La hotels thanks to their fabulous family facilities.

Shangri-La Rasa Ria resort

Although located a fair drive from both the airport and downtown Kota Kinabalu, families continue to flock to this family friendly Kota Kinabalu resort.

The main draw here used to be the onsite orangutan sanctuary. Sadly this closed down a few years ago, but the resort remains as popular as ever thanks to its gorgeous beachfront location and fabulous family facilities.

There are two swimming pools to choose from – one with waterslides and an amazing kids club, with an outdoor playground. There is also a full activity schedule of watersports and beach games for older kids.

Click here to check prices and availability for the Shangri-La Rasa Ria resort.

Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort

Ideally located close to Kota Kinabalu airport and town centre, yet on its own private beach, the Tanjung Aru resort is a big favourite for family holidays in Kota Kinabalu.

Its fantastic family facilities include an awesome water play area with long water slides and a water balloon launching station and a huge swimming pool with tapered shoreline for the kids to play. There’s also a fun kids club plus other activities including watersports and banana boat rides.

Click here to check prices and availability for Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru resort.

Singapore

I wasn’t planning to include cities on this list, but it’s hard to write about family friendly destinations in Asia and not include Singapore! Singapore is the epitome of family friendly cities.

Singapore family friendly destination in Asia

It is so easy to visit Singapore with kids. There are big family attractions such as Singapore Zoo, Universal Studios Singapore and the SEA Aquarium, a fabulous selection of family friendly hotels and so many great restaurants to choose from.

Getting around is easy, with a cheap and efficient public transport system, and everywhere is stroller friendly. There are even beaches to play on. I don’t think you’ll find a more family friendly city in Asia.

Family hotels in Singapore

There is a huge selection of family friendly hotels in Singapore, with all the big name brands represented here, as well as smaller boutique choices. We have a full article dedicated to Singapore family hotels here. The two below are highlighted thanks to their standout family facilities and kids clubs.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore

The Shangri-La Singapore is definitely one of the best city hotels for families in Asia. This hotel is so family friendly it not only has family rooms – it has an entire floor dedicated to family rooms and suites, including 2-bedrooms themed suites.

Add to this amazing family facilities, such as an outdoor playground, outdoor water play area, beautiful swimming pool AND an incredible kids club and you will not believe you are in a city centre hotel, just a 10-minute walk from Orchard Road.

Click here to check prices and availability for the Shangri-La Hotel Singapore.

Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa

The ‘other’ Shangri-La hotel in Singapore is located right on the beach in Sentosa and is a firm favourite for many an Asia family holiday. With all its rooms facing out to sea, you wouldn’t believe you are just a 20-minute drive from the centre of one of Asia’s modern cities.

The only beachfront resort in Sentosa boasts a gorgeous swimming pool with water play area and waterslides and a fabulous kids club. It also has an outdoor playground just outside on the beach and a good choice of restaurants.

  2. Gili island and Philipines are still on our list 🙂 Just couldn’t make it there last time we were in South East Asia. Snorkelling in El Nido looks right up our alley. Thanks for the info on those places 🙂
