Things to do in Langkawi with Kids

Langkawi is the one of the most popular places to visit in Malaysia with family. This is our pick of the best things to do in Langkawi with kids.

Langkawi with kids

Firstly, this is one of the most beautiful islands in Southeast Asia with its huge expanses of untouched rainforest and long white sandy beaches. With much of the island covered in rainforest, many of the Langkawi points of interest revolve around the abundant wildlife found here.

The times we have visited Langkawi we have seen so many different animals – from different types of monkeys to huge monitor lizards, flying squirrels and stingrays. And this was just around our resort!

Add to this the amazing beaches, the family friendly attractions in Langkawi and the fun tours you can take, it’s no wonder that people think this is one of the best places to visit in Malaysia with kids.

If you are wondering what to do in Langkawi with kids other than play on the beach, then here we give you our pick of the best things to do in Langkawi for family visits.

Kilim Geo Park and Mangrove Tour

No trip to Langkawi is complete without visiting the mangrove forest. Of all the Langkawi things to do, this is one of the most unique.

The Kilim Geo Park is a 100km nature reserve with some of the most stunning scenery – towering limestone cliffs, hidden sandy white beaches and hidden caves amongst the mangroves.

Langkawi for family vacation

On our Langkawi mangrove tour with kids we explored a bat cave, visited a deserted island and watched as kites and eagles swooped into the water to catch fish.

This is such a great nature experience for kids – as well as the bats in the bat cave and the birds of prey swooping for fish, we got to see mudskippers, monkeys, a mangrove viper and a baby monitor lizard swimming by.

Our tour ended with lunch at a floating restaurant with its own fish farm, where the kids got to explore the farm and feed the fish. Those with older kids could also consider joining a kayaking tour of the mangroves for even more fun. Definitely one of the best things to do in Langkawi with kids.

Visits to the Kilim Geopark are also available as a kayaking tour. We have done this and loved it (this was before kids but I am sure they would love it too!) Click here to learn more.

Langkawi SkyBridge and SkyCar

Perching on the top a mountain, suspended from a 82 metre single pylon you will find one of the most spectacular attractions in Langkawi: the Langkawi Skybridge. This ‘floating’ bridge hangs at 100 metres above the rainforest and offers incredible views over Langkawi and out to sea.

As the world’s longest curve suspension bridge, this is one of the most popular tourist places in Malaysia. Not recommended if you are scared of heights!

Langkawi SkyBridge

Getting to the SkyBridge is half the fun: the only way to get here is via the Langkawi SkyCar, one of the steepest cable car rides in the world. This 15-minute cable car ride covers 2.2km in distance and takes you up to the Top Station at the SkyBridge at 708 meters above sea level.

The Langkawi SkyBridge entrance fee is included in the SkyCab Langkawi price. Combo tickets with other attractions are available too.

Langkawi Wildlife Park

Another of the best Langkawi island attractions for families is the Langkawi Wildlife Park & Bird Paradise. There are over 2,000 birds from 150 species from around the world at this 5-acre wildlife park.

The emphasis is on being interactive and hands-on, with the opportunity for the kids to help feed the fish and animals, including feeding guinea pigs, cuddling rabbits, and feeding birds out of their hands.

Langkawi Jet Ski Tour

A Langkawi island tour by jet ski is definitely one of the most fun activities in Langkawi for families. Doing a Jet ski Langkawi tour will take you to remote islands, where you can explore deserted beaches, swim in crystal clear lakes and go snorkeling with the stunning Langkawi limestone mountains as a backdrop.

Langkawi Jet Ski Tour with Kids

Children as young as 3 years old can take part in a more sedate tour while if you are looking for more strenuous water sports in Langkawi for older kids, you can combine the jet ski tour with kayaking, hiking and paddle boarding. You won’t find a more fun way to go island hopping in Langkawi.

Oriental Village Langkawi

I was a bit skeptical of the Oriental Village as a Langkawi tourist attraction, and we initially only came here to pick up the SkyCab cable car to the Skybridge. However, we soon discovered that this is one of the most fun places to visit in Langkawi for kids, and we had to drag our children out of here, they were having so much fun.

Oriental Village Langkawi with Kids

It’s a little bit over-touristy with its quaint theme-park feel full of souvenir shops and fast-food outlets, but there is plenty to keep the kids entertained here. Our kids particularly loved the Flying Fox, the SkyDome (a 360-degree 6D cinematic experience) and the Imaginarium – an interactive light and magic walk full of visual effects.

There is also the SkyRex, a 4D immersive cinema experience where you come face-to-face with T-Rex (my kids were too scared to try this one), as well as a 3D Art Museum, Segway tours and ATV Quad bike adventures on offer.

The Oriental Village is also where you can pick up the Duck Tour Langkawi. We haven’t done the Langkawi Duck Tour but you can read our about London Duck Tour experience here to get an idea of what it’s all about.

Langkawi Beaches

Langkawi has some of the best beaches in Southeast Asia. The sand is clean, the water is clear and often you will find the rainforest comes right the way down to meet the shore.

For me the best beach in Langkawi is Datai Bay – but unfortunately this beach is only accessible to residents at the two resorts located on the beach here – The Datai and The Andaman (currently under construction following a fire in January 2021).

But not to worry, there are plenty of other amazing beaches in Langkawi.

Datai Bay Langkawi

Another one of the best Langkawi beaches is Tanjung Rhu. Located in the northeast of Langkawi Island, this long stretch of white sand is home to both the Tanjung Rhu resort and the Four Seasons Langkawi resort – but it is actually a public beach so anyone can rock up for some fun in the sun.

Probably the most popular beach in Langkawi is Pantai Cenang Beach. Here you will find the super family friendly Pelangi Beach Resort as well as some more budget accommodation in Langkawi. There are many bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from here, in addition to Langkawi water sports companies.

What is the best time to visit Langkawi?

The best time to visit Langkawi is the dry season, which usually runs from around mid-November to mid-April. We have always visited Langkawi in December and the weather has always been kind to us!

September and October are the rainiest months in Langkawi. Even if you visit Langkawi in the off-season you are likely to still have a lot of sunshine, with perhaps a couple of hours of rain in the afternoons.

  1. SkyBridge and JetSki are my favorite. Glad to hear that you had a grand time with your kids in Langkawi! You should try other islands in Southeast Asia too and let us know how it goes.

  2. We loved Langkawi, and found it very chilled out. We stayed at the Andaman, which was great for children with a lovely pool and beach. We enjoyed watching the flying squirrels, monitor lizards, hornbills and other wildlife in and around the resort.

We visited the SkyCab cable car and found there is now a fee for the SkyBridge on top of the cable car fee, you can pay 15 MYR extra to use a funicular lift from the cable car to the bridge and back or 5 MYR for walking. There is only one funicular, so the wait for it can be long. The views from both the cable car and the bridge are stunning and it is well worth a visit.
