Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit Hotel Review

This 32-storey art deco inspired Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit hotel brings a touch of French elegance to the heart of Bangkok. This Bangkok city hotel is handily located in the middle of downtown Sukhumvit, a popular business, shopping and nightlife suburb.

This Sofitel hotel Bangkok is just a 2-minute walk from Nana BTS Skytrain station, making sightseeing from here so easy. You can get to Siam in just five minutes, and we traveled to Saphan Taksin on the Chao Praya river in just 20-minutes.

The MTR station is just a five-minute walk away if you are planning to travel anywhere not on the Skytrain route.

If you are in town for shopping, enormous shopping mall Terminal 21 is also just a five-minute walk from this Bangkok Sofitel. Here you will find over 600 shops and 50 cafes, restaurants and fast-food outlets, in addition to a supermarket and gourmet grocery.

Legendary party street Soi 11 is just around the corner, with a huge choice of bars, restaurants and clubs. The Sofitel provides babysitting, so you can happily head out of the evening while your little ones stay tucked up in bed.

Bedtime at the Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit

There are 345 guestrooms at this hotel on Bangkok’s Sukhumvit Road, including 37 spacious suites.

Our Bangkok hotel accommodation for our 3-night stay was a standard Luxury Room with King-sized bed, which was easily large enough to house an additional rollaway bed and still have plenty of room to move around.

Cribs are also available on request, as are connecting rooms for larger families.

Our room was stylishly decorated, blending French sophistication with local Thai design elements. We had a spacious marble bathroom with a bathtub and large walk-in shower. We loved the L’Occitane toiletries.

The kids were delighted with their welcome gift of a travel journal and crayons, and even more so with their surprise gift of some Pokemon toys left during the turndown service one evening.

Playtime at the Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit

Without a doubt the highlight of this hotel from a family point of view is the gorgeous outdoor swimming pool on the 9thfloor. We spent a lovely lazy morning here to recover from our travel day, and also headed here in the afternoons to cool down from sightseeing.

In addition to the large swimming area, there is also a Jacuzzi pool with a massage rainshower, and fun swinging seats to sit in while you are getting massaged. The kids loved splashing around in here.

As soon as we arrived at the pool, a member of staff brought over a selection of pool noodles and floats for the kids, which was hugely appreciated. They happily spent a couple of hours playing with these.

There are plenty of sunloungers to choose from, and these are thoughtfully separated with lots of greenery to ensure privacy for all guests. There are also a couple of large daybeds to hang out in, in addition to other seating areas.

The Liquide Pool Bar provides poolside service. Call buttons next to the sunloungers mean you can order food and drinks without even needing to leave your lounger!

On the same floor as the swimming pool, you will also find the 24-hour So FIT gym and Le SPA with L’Occitane. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to check out the spa, but it did have a tempting sounding menu of treatments.

Dinnertime at the Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit

There is a good choice of restaurants and bars at the Sofitel Sukhumvit. The all-day dining restaurant Voila! overlooks the lobby and dishes up delicious cuisine throughout the day.

Breakfast is a lavish buffet spread of international cuisine, including freshly cooked pancakes, waffles and crepes (a big hit with the kids), an egg station, noodle station and classic Western, Thai, Indian and Middle Eastern breakfast items.

Voila Sofitel Bangkok

Lunch and dinner at Voila! are also buffet-style, although an a-la-carte menu is also available. We enjoyed dinner on arrival here and were impressed with the huge piles of seafood on offer – enormous prawns, crabs, shellfish – if you are seafood lover, this will be a dream come true!

We also loved the tom yum and papaya salad stations (made to order, choose your own spiciness levels!) the barbecue station with a large choice of seafood and meat, and the pasta station with cooked-to-order pasta with a choice of sauces.

There is even a cheese room with a changing selection of French cheeses. There is a kids menu at Voila! but our kids were happy to graze from the buffet.

If you are in town on a Sunday, Voila! is famous for its Sunday brunch, where you can enjoy as much seafood as you can eat, washed down with freeflow champagne.

L'appart restaurant Sofitel bangkok

The signature restaurant at the hotel is L’appart, a chic French restaurant with design inspired by a 19thCentury apartment. The main restaurant boasts a large open kitchen where you can watch the chefs in action, and we particularly liked the cozy corners of the adjoining library.

L’appart serves classic French cuisine with the occasional Asian influence, with Cote de Boeuf, Canadian Lobster, New Zealand King Salmon and Tasmanian Lamb all making an appearance on the menu.

Our favourite part of L’appart was the Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit rooftop bar – a funky bar on the 32ndfloor with an awesome outdoor terrace overlooking the lights of Bangkok.

Despite the cool vibe to this bar (they have a resident DJ spinning the decks), they were welcoming to our kids, who happily munched on a bowl of French fries while we sampled the innovative cocktail menu.

This Sofitel Bangkok rooftop bar is popular for sunset drinks, so book ahead to ensure you get a good table. There is a happy from 5 to 7, when certain drinks are 2-for-1.

Le Macaron is the hotel’s café, located next to the lobby and hotel entrance. We loved the Parisian pavement café feel to this café, which serves up fresh coffee, pastries and freshly made sandwiches. It is a great spot to sit alfresco and sip a coffee as you watch the bustling life of Sukhumvit roll by.

Also in the lobby area is Le Bar de l’Hotel, a cool spot with live music. This would be a good spot to meet up with people before dinner and enjoy a cocktail.

In the ‘hood

Busy bustling Bangkok is an awesome city to explore, and sightseeing is easy from the Sofitel thanks to its fabulous location close to both the BTS Skytrain and MTR.

Of course no visit to Bangkok or Thailand is complete without a visit to the Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace and the nearby Wat Pho with its enormous reclining Buddha. These impressive temple complexes are easily reached by public transport from the Sofitel.

Grand Palace Bangkok

Sealife Bangkok Ocean World is just three stops away on the Skytrain and is a great rainy day activity with kids. Book your tickets ahead of time (click here to buy discounted tickets) and plan to get there for opening to avoid the queues.

Other fun things to do in Bangkok with kids include visiting a floating market, exploring the Thonburi canals, visiting the markets, riding around in a tuk tuk and taking a food tour or cooking class. Click here to read our review of the Family Canal and Tuk Tuk tour we took.

Conclusion of our Bangkok hotel review

The Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit surpassed my expectations. I expected it to feel more like a ‘business’ hotel, but really it just felt like a stylish upmarket city hotel.

As with our stay at the Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa, I was impressed with Sofitel’s stylish design features and attention to detail. I love how they mix up French elegance with local design features.

We could not have been happier with the location, which is perfect for sightseeing in Bangkok with kids. If you are looking for a luxury hotel in a great central location in Bangkok, then I would definitely recommend the Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit.

Top Tip: If you are heading to the hotel from the airport during rush hour and don’t have too much luggage, consider taking the train. We took a taxi, which took 1.5 hours due to traffic. The airport train comes into Phaya Thai train station, which is just 5 BTS Skytrain stops from Nana next to the hotel. We estimated travel time would have been around 45-minutes by train.
