Hotel Review: Padma Resort Ubud

The Padma Resort Ubud is a luxury family-friendly hotel in Bali, located north of Ubud. This 149-room hotel is set within 11-hectares of tropical gardens and boasts stunning views over the bamboo forests.

This luxury family-friendly Ubud hotel has a fabulous 89-metre infinity swimming pool overlooking the forest, with a gorgeous swim-up bar, perfect for lazy sunny days. There are two restaurants, a Kids Club, a fully-equipped gymnasium and even a 1.5km jogging track, which winds its way through the bamboo forest.

Bedtime at the Padma Resort Ubud

At Padma Resort Ubud, you have a choice of Premier Rooms, One Bedroom Suites and Two Bedroom Suites. The Premier Rooms are available in three categories – Premier Room, Premier Deluxe, which are located on ground floor with garden access, and Premier Club, which includes Club access to the Wine Lounge for afternoon tea and evening cocktails.

Our room for our 2-night stay at this family-friendly Ubud hotel was the standard Premier Room, which was a spacious 59 square metres, leaving plenty of room for a rollaway bed for my daughter next to our King size bed.

The bedroom was beautifully decorated – contemporary, yet completed with authentic Balinese furnishings and details, such as custom light fittings and hand-carved wooden mirrors. The dark wood and natural colour scheme complement the beautiful natural surroundings of the resort perfectly.

A 48-inch TV with a selection of international channels and DVD player ensured plenty of in-room entertainment, and the Balinese style robes and slippers were perfect for relaxing in.

The modern bathroom was accessed via a sliding door from the living room (another door lead off the hall), enhancing the feeling of space in the room when open. Here we found a stylish modern freestanding bathtub and fabulous walk-in rain shower, double marble sinks, and plenty of hanging space in the double wardrobes.

We loved our private balcony overlooking the bamboo forest, with comfortable furniture allowing us to relax and enjoy the balmy Balinese climate.

The only thing to note is that there are no mini bars within the hotel rooms. You are provided with a small fridge, but this is empty – and there is no shop on site. So if you want to enjoy in-room snacks and drinks you will need to phone room service, or bring your own.

Playtime at the Padma Resort Ubud

There is no arguing – the absolute highlight of this family-friendly hotel in Ubud is the incredible swimming pool. Winding its way along the front of the resort, this free-form infinity pool is an incredible 89-metres long, making it the biggest hotel pool in Ubud.

You can never tire of the view from the swimming pool over the surrounding bamboo forests, equally enjoyed from one of the sunloungers arranged around the edge, or from the awesome swim-up bar. Importantly, the swimming pool is cooled during the warm days, then warmed as the temperature drops in the evening, meaning it is the perfect temperature for a swim at any time of day.

There is a well-equipped air-conditioned gym alongside the swimming pool and a small weekly activities program is also on offer, including fitness classes, sunrise and sunset yoga sessions, in addition to cycling outings and village visits.

A 1.5km jogging track meanders through the tropical gardens and bamboo forest, leading you down to the river and along a bamboo bridge. The path is pretty steep and includes a few steps, so I’m not sure how suitable it is for jogging, but it made for a very pleasant morning walk, to admire the views over the forest and partake in some local wildlife spotting.

Of course all kids (and parents!) want to know about the Kids Club. My kids absolutely loved the Wolly Kids Club at Padma Resort Ubud. This brightly decorated room is one of the best-equipped kids clubs I have come across, with train sets, lego, computer games, books and dolls galore. There’s even a bunk bed room for naps! Most importantly, the hands-on staff were brilliant with the kids.

The Kids Club also has a weekly activity schedule, including plenty of fun activities running from 9am-8.30pm. These include cupcake decorating, Balinese dancing, arts & crafts, bracelet making, card games, pool games – and there is a movie every evening from 7pm. A kids menu is also available for them to enjoy lunch and dinner in the Kids Club.

Its location next to the swimming pool meant that they could come and go as they pleased while we relaxed by the pool, which was ideal. When they tired of swimming, they would take off to the kids club for an hour, and then return to us when they wanted to jump back in the pool. Right in front of the kids club is a small kids pool, with a waterfall that provided hours of entertainment too.

Unfortunately I didn’t have time to indulge in a spa treatment, but I did take a peek inside the cave-like sanctuary and felt immediately relaxed the moment I entered. The spa menu includes a fabulous sounding selection of massages, scrubs, masques and facials and there is even a massage and mini-facial on offer for younger guests, aged 4-10.

Dinnertime at the Padma Resort Ubud

There are two restaurants at the Padma Resort Ubud. We enjoyed a buffet breakfast every morning in the Puhu Restaurant and Lounge, a large airy restaurant with a choice of indoor or outdoor dining on the terrace. We always chose the outdoor terrace for its fabulous views over the resort swimming pool and beyond to the valley of bamboo forest and terraced rice paddies.

The Puhu Restaurant and Lounge is also open for lunch and dinner with a large selection of Asian and international dishes, including a grill selection, pastas, salads, sandwiches, curries, noodles, stir-fries and Balinese favourites. A kids’ menu is also available with a large selection of local and western dishes.

Padma ubud resort pool bar

We also loved the Pool Café & Bar. With its Mediterranean tiling, rattan furniture and views over the swimming pool, this is the perfect spot to indulge in a relaxed family meal. We enjoyed a lovely evening meal here, indulging in some of their local Balinese cuisine, while the kids tucked into excellent pizza from the onsite wood-fired oven. Other dishes on offer include a wide selection of salads, sandwiches and pasta.

But the highlight for me at this family-friendly hotel in Bali, was the swim-up bar (of course!) With 16 underwater stools and amazing views, this was definitely my favourite place to hang out. I even enjoyed half an hour here with a cold fresh coconut and my kindle, while the kids played in the Kids Club. Bliss! The team of mixologists were always smiling and served up a mean Mango Mojito – which, by the way, were 2-for-1 in happy hour every day from 3pm-5pm.

We also enjoyed snacks from the pool bar menu at our sunloungers, and you can also opt to enjoy snacks and refreshments in the lobby Lounge.

In the ‘hood

The Padma Resort Ubud is a 40-minute drive from Ubud centre. The hotel provides a shuttle bus five times a day in and out of Ubud, with the first bus leaving at 9am, and the last bus returning from Ubud at 9pm.

Things to do in ubud with Kids

There are plenty of things to do in Ubud with kids. Hire a driver for the day to explore the countryside, hike along the Tegalalang Rice Terraces, watch a Barong Dance, visit Ubud’s Sacred Monkey Forest, wander around the local temples and markets, bathe in the holy waters of Tirta Empul temple, go whitewater rafting along the Ayung River, visit the Bali Bird & Reptile Park, or swing through the trees at the Bali Treetop Adventure Park.

Conclusion

The Padma Resort Ubud far exceeded my expectations. The natural setting is completely stunning with views over the bamboo forest and terraced rice paddies from wherever you are in the resort.

Our room was comfortable and beautifully appointed, the swimming pool is one of the most impressive I have come across, and I LOVED the swim-up bar. The Kids Club also gets top marks for being well equipped, easy and with friendly staff.

Despite how family-friendly this resort is, it still maintains the feel of calm and relaxation that you would hope to experience at a luxury Ubud hotel. Its distance from Ubud Centre is not really ideal if you want to spend a lot of time wandering around Ubud itself, but makes for the perfect relaxing retreat. And with the hotel shuttle bus, you can easily head into town for the day or evening.

I would definitely recommend the Padma Resort Ubud if you are on a family vacation in Bali and looking for a luxury family-friendly hotel in Ubud.

  1. Wow! Great comprehensive review. I loved my time in Ubud and it is busy there. This seems like a great way to spend some time a little deeper in nature and further from the bustle of Ubud. Can’t wait to return and check out this resort!

    • Thanks Brian – yes it was a great retreat – we split our time between here and another hotel in Ubud centre, and that was perfect 🙂

      • Hello! Thank you for the fantastic review. We will be travelling to Bali with our 4 year old and 6 year old this summer. How many days would you say is sufficient to stay in ubud? We too are looking to split or stay in Ubud between the Padman resort and somewhere more central to Ubud. Can you advise how many nights is sufficient in both and can you recommend a family friend resort in central Ubud? Many thanks!

        • Hi Mrs Kaur, thank you! I think a week in Ubud would be a nice time to have some chill out time and also do some sightseeing and exploring. We stayed in one of the Komaneka resorts in the centre. IF you have the budget, the Four Seasons has a great kids club and is lovely, although it is also outside Ubud town centre. Have a great time!

    • Hi Nora. Have you looked at the Mansion? I don’t know the hotel personally but I know that they have family rooms and a kids club. Check prices on Hotels Combined using the links above too to compare prices, I think the Padma Ubud sometimes does some good deals.

  6. Hi Marianne, thanks for a great review and pics. We are currently researching a Bali holiday. Padma looks amazing but hubby is worried about the distance to Ubud. Do you feel like you would have missed out on anything if you had stayed here only and not split your time between Padma and a town central place? Thanks in advance!

    • Hi Rachel. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I would probably recommend splitting the time if you want to get out and about lots. It is quite a drive and while I loved being there, and they do have a shuttle bus I think if you wanted to be in Ubud a lot for sightseeing/meals etc it might get a bit annoying.
