There are so many things to do in Margaret River with kids, but the main appeal of coming to Western Australia’s Margaret River wine region, of course, is to visit the Margaret River wineries and taste the famous Margaret River wine.

There are so many fabulous wineries in Margaret River.

In fact the 200+ Margaret River wineries are responsible for 25% of Australia’s premium wine, so you know you are in for a treat.

But it’s not just the wine that the Margaret River wineries excel at – they also dish up fabulous cuisine, boasting some of the best restaurants in Margaret River region.

We have spent a lot of time in the Margaret River over the last few years, and have checked out most of the best Margaret River wineries for lunch over this time.

Note that most cellar door Margaret River restaurants are only open for lunch and so we usually indulge in a fabulous lunch, then barbecue at home in the evening.

Will’s Domain

Located overlooking the Gunyulgup Valley, this family friendly Margaret River winery has it all: fabulous views over the Margaret River vineyards, award-winning wine, delicious cuisine, and a playground to keep the kids busy while the grown ups enjoy a leisurely lunch.

Renowned as one of the best Margaret River winery restaurants, Will’s Domain is setting the standards for Mod Aus cuisine in the region.

The a la carte menu is littered with interesting concoctions such as Grilled Marron with preserved onion congee and kombu, or Wagin Duck with kohlrabi, quince and Japanese mustard, or opt for the 5- or 7-course degustation menu, served with matching wines, of course.

Leeuwin Estate

One of the most famous wineries in Margaret River, Leeuwin Estate is renowned for its stunning Margaret River wines, most notably its Arts Series Chardonnay and Arts Series Cabernet Sauvignon.

But Leeuwin Estate is also famous for dishing up one of the best winery lunches in Margaret River.

Utilising a “paddock to plate” philosophy, the Leeuwin Estate restaurant focuses on regional produce, and working with local suppliers to create seasonal menus, creating inventive dishes such as South West yabbies, papaya salad and gochujang and ‘Big Red’ Pork rack with jamon, persimmon and hazelnuts.

The setting is stunning, with sweeping verandahs overlooking a large meadow (perfect for the kids to run freely) surrounded by a forest of karri trees.

Vasse Felix

This famous Margaret River winery restaurant overlooks some of the region’s oldest vines, and boasts an award-winning menu of Modern Australian cuisine.

Head Chef Brendan Pratt joined Vasse Felix in July 2017, having honed his skills at some of the world’s most impressive restaurants, including 3 Michelin starred The Fat Duck. 

Choose from the ever-changing a la carte menu, or allow Chef Pratt to take you on a Margaret River culinary journey with the tasting menu, with optional paired wines.

Cullen

Cullen Wines was the first winery in Margaret River to offer a cellar door restaurant and continues to enjoy a reputation as having one of having one of the best winery restaurants in Margaret River.

The focus is on local, organic and biodynamic at Cullen, with many of the ingredients coming from the winery’s own biodynamic gardens.

Chef Colin Anderson upped Cullen’s culinary offerings to new heights when he joined the Margaret River winery in December 2015, introducing a range of exciting dishes demonstrating skills learned under famous chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, Jason Atherton and Peter Gilmore.

Anderson has since returned to his roots in Glasgow, Scotland leaving the award-winning restaurant in the capable hands of Executive Chef, Bordeaux local Antoine Deunff. 

And with Vanya Cullen being named winemaker of the year in the 2020 Halliday Wine Companion Awards, you know you are going to be in for some sensation wine. Be sure to taste the latest vintage of Diana Madeline, Cullen Wine’s most famous red wine, before you leave!

What I really love about Cullen is its large garden, surrounded by vineyards with beanbags to kick back on and enjoy the Australian sunshine.

Xanadu

Xanadu is a beautiful and modern child friendly Margaret River winery, which has enjoyed a growing reputation for its wines over recent years, with the 2011 Xanadu Stevens Road Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon being named James Halliday’s Wine of the Year in 2015, with a staggering 99 points.

In addition to award-winning wines, Xanadu is also renowned for being a great spot for a Margaret River lunch, with its restaurant awarded a Chef Hat in 2019.

The restaurant with its high vaulted ceiling, and layers of wood and natural stone makes a stylish yet comfortable setting for a long lazy lunch, with the grassy lawn strewn with beanbags inviting you to laze around afterwards. There’s even a playground to keep the kids happy.

The menu encourages you to eat tapas-style with a selection of small sharing plates featuring king prawns, kangaroo, beef cheek, pork cheek, falafel and house smoked salmon, or choose to go large with lamb shank, pork belly and seasonal fish.

All food is exquisitely prepared under the guidance of Head Chef Melissa Kokoti.

Aravina Estate

Executive Chef Ben Day and Sous Chef Tom Spencer, formerly of Knee Deep are responsible for recently stepping up the food a notch at this Margaret River winery, creating exciting and innovative seasonal menus.

With a focus on locally sourced organic and sustainable ingredients, the menu presents a range of light and healthy dishes for lunch in Margaret River.

These include Barramundi with Geographe Bay squid, butternut, seaweed butter and bottarga; and the sweet and savoury Crispy Lamb Pastilla with charred eggplant salad, date & rose puree and nettle yoghurt. And of course each dish has a suggested Aravina Estate wine to wash it down with.

For something more casual, check out their Riviera/Pizza Bar, which offers up gourmet Italian pizzas and grazing boards. No need to book here – just turn up and roll out a picnic rug and kick back to the sound of live music. 

Another reason this is one of the best places to eat in Margaret River, particularly if you are visiting with kids – is the grounds. Beautiful gardens are ablaze with colourful hydrangeas, there are lawns to run around on, a gated playground – and even a showroom filled with vintage sports cars to admire.

Rustico at Hay Shed Hill

The gorgeous laid back Rustico restaurant serves up delicious Mediterranean cuisine and tapas style dishes perfect for sharing, as well as its popular pizzas.

The 6 course tapas degustation menu paired with premium Hay Shed Hill wines is a popular option. 

Enjoying a secluded peaceful spot overlooking the vineyards, Hay Shed Hill offers plenty of space for the kids to run around, as well as resident chickens and famous winery dog Becky to meet.

Swings & Roundabouts

Swings & Roundabouts is where to head to for a good pizza and a nice glass of rose, when you’ve overindulged in all that fancy Margaret River dining. It’s the perfect place to kick back on a bean bag or picnic rug and enjoy the sunshine.

In addition to those pizzas, a selection of grazing boards, salads and desserts are all on offer, in addition to kids meal favourites nuggets and pasta. 

Swings & Roundabouts is one of the best child friendly wineries in Margaret River for a lazy afternoon in the sunshine. We love its vast lawn with oversized beanbags and picnic tables, and garden games such as swingball and cricket.

Voyager Estate

One of Margaret River’s most renowned wineries also has one of its most lauded restaurants. 

Housed within a Cape Dutch colonial style building and set amongst stunning formal gardens resplendent with rose bushes, lunch at Voyager is a fine dining experience that begins as soon as you set foot on the estate. 

Dining is by degustation menu, with a choice of a 7-course Discovery menu or 4-course Terroir menu. 

Changing seasonally, chef Santiago Fernandez’s menu is inspired by showcasing local seasonal produce, with a focus on ethically sourced, organic and sustainably produced produce.

Expect exquisite dishes such as Aged Duck with cherry and mulberry and, Wagyu with duck liver and blueberry and Octopus with allium and umeboshi.

Amelia Park

Relative newcomer to the Margaret River dining scene, Amelia Park gives you spectacular views over the surrounding vineyards. 

The restaurant is in the very capable hands of husband and wife team Blair and Renee Allen, who already have a Premier’s Award and 6 Gold Plates from their time at Yallingup’s Studio Bistro and Dunsborough’s Piari & Co. 

A wood fired oven and grill produces bistro style food designed to share, crafted from local produce, some of which comes from the restaurant’s own gardens. The slow cooked lamb shoulder comes highly recommended!

Arimia Estate

Beautiful Arimia was always a bit of a hidden secret in Margaret River. However its restaurant has just earned its first Chefs Hat in the Good Food Guide 2020, so it won’t remain secret for long. 

Set in a gorgeous garden setting Arimia restaurant is a bastion of ethical sustainable cuisine, with the restaurant producing its own pork, trout, olives, olive oil, grapes, honey, marron, fruit and vegetables. What it doesn’t produce itself it sources from ethical and sustainable suppliers. 

Expect delicious dishes such as line caught local fish with asparagus and wild leek and Margaret River wagyu with white beans and beetroot.

With the kitchen staff dedicated to a zero waste approach, you can expect some creative cuisine under Head Chef Evan Hayter.
