Here we round up the best restaurants in Seminyak, Bali – both kid-friendly restaurants in Seminyak, and those more suitable for a date night during your Bali vacation.
Any experienced travel mum will tell you that things rarely go to plan when holidaying with kids and the key to a happy family holiday is to lower expectations and compromise. We were reminded of this lesson when on a family vacation in Bali. Until then, my husband and I were firmly in the camp of ‘put your kids to bed, book a babysitter, then go out for dinner’ when on holiday. That was until our two and a half-year old daughter decided to scream hysterically for an hour instead of going to sleep, and it soon became apparent that a new dinner strategy would need to be implemented.
And so we were introduced to the whole new concept of early family dinners on holiday (but still in fancy restaurants, naturally!) That said, I am still an advocate for mum-and-dad-only date nights, and shall be eternally grateful for hotel babysitting services, especially when I am visiting Seminyak, a sleepy Balinese beach town that has attracted some of the world’s best chefs to its shores. Here is a round-up of five of the best restaurants in Seminyak, both for date nights and family dinners.
La Lucciola was one of our favourite Seminyak restaurants before we had kids, and we were afraid that meals at this beachside beauty would come to an end once the brood grew. How wrong we were! Whereas once we came here after sunset cocktails for the romantic candlelit atmosphere, and to dine to the sound of the waves, now we come early and let the kids run riot on the expanse of grass in front of the restaurant, before tucking into the delicious Mediterranean fare as the sun sets.
One of my all-time favourite restaurants in the world, MÉTIS is definitely a restaurant you will want to save for a night when you make use of the hotel babysitting service. The al-fresco courtyard of this secluded and romantic restaurant is surrounded by Bali’s natural beauty and promises you a memorable dining experience. Arrive early to enjoy a cocktail on the terrace overlooking the rice paddy fields and lotus ponds, before indulging in some supremely executed French-Mediterranean cuisine. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Seminyak.
Right across the road from MÉTIS is another spectacular Seminyak restaurant best saved for date night. The striking bamboo thatched pavilion overlooks a vista of endless rice paddies, making this one of the most visually stunning settings in all of Seminyak. The super-fresh seafood is the star of the show here though, changing daily depending on the local catch of the day, and dished up with vegetables sourced from the restaurant’s own organic farm in the Balinese mountains.
Sarong is the place to head to for your Asian food fix in Bali. Head chef and owner Will Meyrick, aka “the street food chef” has travelled extensively through far-flung Asian regions, sampling local street food, which has inspired his eclectic menu of Pan-Asian creations. It might be street food-inspired, but make no mistake – this is perfectly executed, innovative Asian cuisine. Will Meyrick’s funky-sister restaurant Mama San is also among the best restaurants in Seminyak.
Naughty Nuri’s Warung
Naughty Nuri’s Warung is not what you would normally describe as ‘fabulous’, given its rustic, no-frills setting. But let me tell you, the ribs they serve here are amongst the best you will taste anywhere in the world. Seriously. And you know what they serve with those fall-off-the-bone sumptuous smoky ribs? Martinis! Straight-up vodka or gin martinis, shaken not stirred. Ribs and Martinis – you’re in for a fun night at this Seminyak restaurant. Bring the kids – it’s a laid-back and convivial setting; nobody will notice how much noise they make. Plus, you’ll want to arrive early to beat the queue. Shake shake!
So that is my list of the best restaurants in Seminyak, but the list could easily have been twenty or more, so incredible is the restaurant scene in Seminyak. So please feel free to let me, and other readers, know which are your favourite Seminyak restaurants in the comments below.
